Exactly what I was after
So I found out my Maxima had a cabin air filter - great idea I thought, I'd really appreciate not breathing in dust/pollen/etc. Of course this means the thing needs changing and thus one goes to hunt down a supplier. The fram stood out from the rest because it has baking soda as well for odour removal although I can't actually rate the efficacy of that feature since I don't drive through smelly areas as a course of habit. I would pay extra for filtering that exceeds OEM spec but it seems all the filters including the fram are happy to just provide the spec (which is still miles ahead of nothing).

Bought this cabin filter for my 2000 Nissan Maxima. After seeing a commercial on TV about changing the cabin filter regularly, I thought I would do this myself. Installing it was simple. Glad I did because my car didn't have one in it! The air vent tubes were coated with dirt, dust and pollen. After cleaning out the vent and tubes I installed the filters. Air comming out of the vents now is fresh and clean. Glad I saw that commercial. Thanks Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs and Ford!
